Erik Groessl, Ph.D.

Center Director

 

Dr. Groessl has served as Center Director of the UCSD Health Services Research Center since 1999. He is an Assistant Professor in the UCSD Department of Family and Preventive Medicine and is a Principal Investigator in the VA San Diego Health Services Research and Development unit.

He received his Clinical Psychology PhD in 1999 from the SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program with a specialization in behavioral medicine/ health psychology.

Dr. Groessl conducts research in the general areas of:

  • Health outcomes assessment
  • Health-related quality of life
  • Cost-effectiveness
  • Chronic disease
  • Patient self-management

His current projects focus on Hepatitis C self-management, liver biopsy in the VA system, Integrating Care models for HCV clinics, and the benefits of yoga for treating chronic low back pain.

Dr. Groessl completed a 3-year VA HSRD Career Development Award in 2007 during which he developed a comprehensive, patient self-management program for veterans with hepatitis C.

Currently, he is conducting a 3-year randomized trial comparing the effects of the HCV self-management program to an information-only intervention. He is also completing a large database analysis of liver biopsy use in the national VA system and will be starting a 4-year study of integrated care models in HCV care. In addition, he has published pilot data on the benefits if yoga for veterans with chronic low back pain.
